fire well [05 Feb 2008|12:11am]

[ mood | thoughtful ]

i'm from Youngstown; haven't been in many years; sometimes i think the whole area is cursed, it had one of the world's highest murder rates, highest alcoholism rates; and drugs: drug related deaths are more  proportionately than major cities' numbers. The area was never settled by indians. Its salt springs provided salt for the natives of many tribes in a large region, and so it was reckoned an area of peace. Whites started to come in the 1790s, but the salt springs remained open. in the 1840s at a little fresh water spring (aren't many of those about) at the edge of the spring area, a family of 6 was killed, slaughtered according to reports, with knives or tomahawks, their bodies burnt. The Indians were driven from the area- they had henceforth to buy their salt, but many were killed and burnt in the decade that followed before the lesson was learnt. The salt springs became a major 19th century commercial area, source for salt,  lye, lime & potash and other chemical  manufacturings, and salt glaze pottery firms; but such enterprises petered out a little after the turn of the century; to this day the area is basicly underdeveloped. Though curiously U.S. routes 11 & I-80 come through and have major truck stops very near. There is so much gas stored there it was feared that it might become a a terrorist target. I believe there was even some speculation it was an alternate target for 9/11 suiciders.  A church at the site of the original killings was burnt down in the 1970s mysteriously. That was what got me thinking on the number of fire related deaths within a few hundred yards of that well, and got me to do the historical research, too. Here's the toll as far as I know: Two boys sniffing gas; two families, one a gas leak fire(4 dead), one a tar roof shack where 6 died, a kids' tree house fire where four died. There was also a neighborhood boy who kept starting fires, twice being trapped in them. He ending up horribly scarred. All this just in the 10 years or so of my youth in the area. As kids we would sometimes see a light in the night sky on cloudy nights- this was later ascribed by our elders to swamp gas phenomena from the marshes around the salt springs. Before we were aware of the history or of even swamp gas we called this "the fire bird" just a light in the clouds that moved around and disappeared- could have been something or nothing- but it was part of our legacy, might have been a word of mouth thing for how long- hundreds of years? told boy to boy, seen mostly by boys out on summer nights too, I reckon. There have been UFO sightings recently just there too- by the way :
The well is behind the (rebuilt) four mile run christian church on four mile run road in Austintown., down in the hollow there just above the creek-
[there's a pioneer cemetery by the church too]

my friend sarah came home for the long weekend and since she is basically the only person i know who shares the same love of cemeteries that i do we decided to go to a few today. we really wanted to check out lake view cemetery in cleveland. lake view is to cleveland what greenlawn is to columbus. they are both huge, beautiful cemeteries. we LIVE in the cleveland area, but still neither of us had been to this cemetery. we made a day of it...

i think we hiked all around that cemetery...we got there at maybe 1:45 and stayed til 5 pm. here are the pictures...

angels, and plaques, and obelisks, oh my!Collapse )

Strangewire [30 Apr 2005|05:15pm]

Hey, just wanted to let you guys know about Strangewire.com, a blog for all things paranormal, supernatural, and the like from legitimate news sources. Unlike the type of sites and columns that deal in "wacky news"-style articles about goofy work mishaps and amusing medical malpractice, Strangewire attempts to deal with phenomena that are part of a bigger question, from strange lights in the sky in the south-west US, to a man with claims of a haunting in Australia, from zombies and voodoo practice in Haiti to global government conspiracies. Fox Mulder's favorite blog, in other words. Recent articles include headlines such as "FLESH CHUNKS IN IOWA WATER LINES" and "NEW JAPANESE GHOST DETECTOR FOR SALE."

Check out Strangwire.com, or just add the livejournal feed here to your friends list.

Intro... [31 Mar 2005|01:27pm]

[ mood | curious ]

Hey there..
My name is Stacey and I live in Lake County Ohio. I know, I know...you're all jealous. So anyway...I love to read/learn/watch things about ghosts/paranormal/UFO's the whole nine yards. I love to be scared by it and debate it with people. I went to a 'haunted' college for a while...Lake Erie College in Painesville is supposed to have a ghost in the 4th floor of the College Hall (although I never heard anything from those living on campus at the time), the Equestrian Center is said to be haunted by Indians, and the girl's dorm is suppose to be visited by a spirit at night. I have always had an interest in ghosts and all the cool stuff that goes along with them.

I don't think I've ever run into one...but it would be cool...

I look forward to reading all your experiences....

Curious: [24 Nov 2004|07:07pm]

I recently moved to Cincinnati and managed to land myself in a haunted house. Gotta love it.

Anyway, I do love these things and I'm seeing a whole lot of sites about ghost hunters in Ohio. Are there any in Cincy or surrounding areas that wouldn't mind letting someone along once or twice? ... Or maybe a lot more?

phantoms fill the skies around you. [19 Nov 2004|12:34pm]

hey, i'm rebekah.

i've been getting myself into trouble with scary places for a few years now, especially since i met my boyfriend in cincinnati. we seem to keep going to the same places over and over again, so i'd like some new ideas!

but so far the scariest place i've been too (and have yet to wonder through it) is the powder factory near king's island. i'm thinking about doing a photo shoot there soon, though. everything's going to be set up, unfortunately, and i'm gonna be tying a lot of things from the poltergeist incident from san pedro, cali from the late 80s/early 90s.

anyways, glad to be here! if you live in the dayton/cincinnati area, i'm also looking for new friends to hang with!

New to you [13 Apr 2004|06:06pm]

[ mood | bored ]

Hi. Seems noone is writing much in here, but I thought I would join anyhow. =D I've been to a bunch of different places in NE Ohio, including HellTown, Gore Orphanage, The Witches Ball. I have recent daytime pictures from Helltown which includes the cemetary, some of the houses, the gas station, and the church. I also have some night time shots of Franklin Castle, but only one of them turned out really well. I've been planning on returning for more day time shots as it is within 5 minutes driving time from where I live. If anyone is interested in the pictures, just let me know and I will post some of them. When the weather warms up (and dries up) more I plan to take a few more trips to local legends for pictures. When I go on these mini-adventures, I will update with photos/details/stories.
